Stroopwafel launches in Capitol Cebu

Feb032012

Stroopwafel, the social entrepreneurship program of Child and World Cebu Empower, Inc. officially opened today, February 3, at its production site in Brgy. Capitol, Cebu City. Rene Willems, founder/general manager of CWCE mixed the ingredients, baked and packed the first 150 stroopwafels.

A short program was witnessed by about 50 LGU officials, funders, ngo friends and staff and close community members. City councilman Alvin Dizon, together with Brgy. Capitol Captain Manuel Guanzon, cut the ribbon and gave inspiring talks. The event was highlighted by smelling, feeling and eating the warm waffles, as it came out fresh from the oven, the syrup still dripping.

"It is a sweet experience. Community mothers are excited of the newly opened bakery of which they will run and manage", says Jagat Rubio, a social partner of CWCE.

Stroopwafel hits Cebu

Jan142012

Child and World Cebu –Empower, Inc. (CWCE), a non-government organization working to uplift the lives of children and their families, will launch the Stroopwafel Bakeshop on February 3, 2012 at the Villalon Drive, Capitol Site, Cebu City.
The bakeshop is a livelihood project of CWCE, which will initially employ seven family bread-winners in the underprivileged community in the barangay. Aside from providing employment, it also aims to provide continued funds for the sustained operation of Child and Wolrd Cebu.

“It all began with picking a battle, which we believed we could win, and then starting to work things out in order to win it. The StroopWafel or syrup waffle, showed us the way. It is a Dutch delicacy, an instant hit every time we take them to Cebu along with chocolates from the Netherlands. We thought of making them here and allow people to enjoy them fresh. What followed was over one year of fundraising in the Netherlands among many small donors. They and the organizations of Wilde Ganzen en NCDO, enabled us to renovate a building that was given by the Barangay Capitol Site for livelihood purposes,” says Rene Willems, CWCE Program Director.
Willems explains that CWCE believes that the growth of their livelihood program will be a mere byproduct in the pursuit of excellence. It is banking on the eagerness of the community that is ready to improve through more self-help. And the happy faces of children in our program provide all the motivation that is needed for the community to succeed.
